Reading has been part of human life since the beginning of our existence, and even today, it remains a favorite hobby for many people. We discuss books in school, read in our free time, and this hobby is also widely represented on social media. Beyond its enjoyment, let’s talk about the benefits of reading books that might motivate you to read more:
- Creativity and Imagination
When you watch a movie, you’re already given a template of people’s appearances, the scenery, etc., but when you read a book, everyone imagines things differently, no matter how detailed the description might be. For instance, if I asked you to think about a pen, the pen in your mind would likely be very different from the one I imagine.
- Vocabulary
Reading expands your vocabulary. The more you read, the more words you learn that you can use in your daily life. You learn how to describe things better and how to express yourself more precisely.
- Empathy Development
Whether it’s fiction or someone’s biography, reading about other people’s thoughts, feelings, and actions helps you put yourself in someone else’s shoes, fostering an understanding of different perspectives and behaviors. This can deepen your empathy and improve your relationships.
- Concentration and Memory
Focusing on a story, its characters, and the plot improves your concentration across all areas of life. As an exercise for your brain, reading enhances your memory and focus. It also makes distractions less tempting when you need to work or study since reading regularly accustoms you to sitting down and concentrating on a task.
- Improved Sleep
We often scroll on our phones before bed, but the blue light from screens can disrupt sleep quality. If you decide to read a book instead, you’ll likely fall asleep faster and enjoy better sleep quality, as reading helps you relax. This has been proven by numerous scientific studies.
- Gaining Knowledge
The fact that, centuries ago, reading was a skill taught only to the highest and wealthiest classes makes today’s accessibility to books a privilege. We have access to millions of books containing knowledge from people who spent a lifetime developing it. Whether it’s Aristotle or Jeff Bezos, we can absorb their ideas and insights in just a few hours.
